Harnessing BIM Technology and Integrated Project Delivery for Sustainable Design

As I was gearing up to head to Boston I received an email from a lady in Dallas who happened upon my Archinect Schoolblog from my terminal year at Texas Tech. It’s interesting to see how one’s web persona can be shaped by a search engine. If you haven’t ever Googled your name…you should. You can bet that if someone is looking for information about you that’s the first place they’ll look.

It’s all about the big “I” in Information, isn’t that really why we are all here. We’ve been building for centuries and modeling for decades but only recently have we been able to effectively and efficiently access and aggregate information within our models. We are not quite there yet. I think some are waiting to see who will drop the ultimate “Google-like” software smack down on the profession. The problem with that is BIM is more than a tool, it’s a methodology. A fundamental shift in the way we do business. As Douglas Palladino (a mentor of mine at RTKL Associates) commonly says “We are designing buildings, not drawings! We want to spend our time thinking about the building not the drawings.” As we approach 100% implementation of BIM in my office, it’s easy to see how its improved our design and documentation process. Now I’m looking for ways it can facilitate our sustainable design efforts.

In the meantime, I think I’ll spend the next few minutes Googling some of the speakers….. Feel free to do so yourself and please comment if you dig up anything you’d like to share.
