About Me:
Philip Bona’s expertise encompasses sustainable regional and urban design principles and policies supporting green building, renewable energy, water conservation and climate impact reduction. His recent work as Assistant Vice President of Architecture and Planning at CCDC included review of a variety of development and park project entitlements in addition to organizing a San Diego Sustainability Advisory Committee, establishing a sustainable village initiative process; coordinating California green legislation analysis and recommendations; developing San Diego Urban Sustainable Design Guidelines for CCDC; developing local, state and federal green building and energy policy recommendations, and writing articles on San Diego’s urban sustainability. He organized an International Call for Papers and Symposium on Urban Sustainability in connection with the San Diego Green Conference in 2008, publishing the successful papers locally and on the AIA National Knowledge Community Website. In conjunction with the Conference he edited and distributed the “Declaration of Interdependence for a Sustainable San Diego Future” and collected over 250 signatures from political and professional community leaders.

His leadership helped to consolidate the various City of San Diego, County of San Diego, Port of San Diego sustainable policy efforts into a common regional discussion focusing on water reuse, construction waste recycling, and use of cooperative renewable energy sources partnering with San Diego Gas and Electric. He participated in developing the 2010 Imperative as an initiative issued by Architecture 2030 advocating ecological literacy to combat global warming and world resource depletion. Further, he has designed and constructed a number of sustainable and LEED equivalent buildings and has lectured on green building design.

Previously he has been Principal and Senior Associate with a number of San Francisco Bay Area firms providing professional architectural and planning services to hundreds of private and public sector clients throughout California. Providing professional services for 35 years, he has developed expertise in urban design and planning for redevelopment, community master planning, firm management, project management, architectural design, computer drawing, specification writing and construction administration. Possessing experience in all facets of architectural practice and management, he has had leadership roles in firms from 4 persons to 190 persons in size and has managed construction programs up to $450 Million.

Throughout his career, Mr. Bona has been very active in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) organization at the national, state, and local levels advocating for smart growth, sustainability and the efficient use of advanced technology. He is also active in the American Planning Association, the Lambda Alpha International Land Use organization, AIA San Diego Urban Design Committee, San Diego Design Council, and the U.S. Green Building Council. He has been a recognized leader in the development of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Design and Construction; he initiated the “Integrated Design and Construction Industry Alliance” in the Bay Area and also lectured at the 2006 AIA National Convention’s Technology in Architectural Practice Conference and the AIA California Council Desert Practice Conference. His articles on BIM, IPD, Mentoring and Redevelopment have been published in six industry magazines.
Reason for attending this event
I believe that intelligent, sustainably and spiritually minded people can use technology to more healthfully direct the planet and the built environment into a more symbiotic state of being.
